West Virginia Fall Foliage: The Best Cabin Getaway in the Appalachians

Back to Mountain Guide

West Virginia's Allegheny Mountains put on one of the most spectacular fall foliage shows in the eastern United States. Here's when to go, where to stay, and what to do.

Why West Virginia Has the Best Fall Foliage on the East Coast

West Virginia is consistently ranked among the top fall foliage destinations in the eastern United States — and it's dramatically underrated compared to Vermont or the Smokies. The Allegheny Mountains in Pocahontas County, where Snowshoe Mountain is located, offer a combination of elevation, forest diversity, and low light pollution that produces spectacular color at peak.

The secret: at 4,000-4,800 feet elevation, the Allegheny Highlands experience fall color 2-3 weeks earlier than the valleys below, and the mix of red maple, yellow birch, orange beech, and deep red sourwood creates a palette that rivals anything in New England.

When Does Fall Foliage Peak Near Snowshoe Mountain?

Fall foliage timing varies by elevation:

Best window: October 5-20 is typically the sweet spot for peak color near our properties. The 2025 peak was October 9-16 — plan your trip for the second week of October as a baseline.
